Let The Games Begin| Alex Gaskarth| 15

I want to thank so many people but I don’t have enough room. However, I do need to say five shout-outs. First, ddoorrootthhyyy for being the first and only one to find the Anarbor lyric. Her poems are pretty good too. Second, PurplePlez for always giving me reassuring feedback. Her messages make me smile. Third, xMissPATDX for being awesome, amazing and just as random as me. Fourth, iNikes for making my day so much better. Fifth, followmedown for reading just about everything I write. This is for you.

I walked into my house and slammed the front door. I could already feel a huge weight building on my shoulders.

Tomorrow was going to be torture. I could already feel it.

“Michelle?” My mom called from the kitchen.

I walked over to where she was chopping some onions. “Ye-yes mom?” I had no idea why I was so nervous. Could someone have already told her?

“Oh, good you’re home. Tylee and some boy are in your bedroom. They said they really needed to talk to you.”

I tried to breathe normally, “Is it the same boy from earlier?”

“No, a different boy. Sweetie, are you okay? You don’t look good.”

She took a step towards me. “Oh, I’m fine. I just…I mean I’m going to see what Tylee wants.”

I walked up the steps and opened my bedroom door. “Jack Barakat, what the hell are you doing?”

Tylee sat on the edge of my bed laughing.

“How could you let him do that?”

She abruptly stopped laughing. “How could you do this?” She held up her phone. My LM message flashed back at me.

I shrugged. “I was mad.”

We looked over to where Jack was still looking through my underwear drawer. I groaned, “Jack get your hands out of my drawers and get that bra off of your inexistent boobs.”

He gasped and pretended to look shocked. “Are you kidding? I fill this bra out perfectly.”

I laughed, but it soon died out. “Why are you here? Aren’t you mad at me?”

“Tylee and I figured that since the entire school would hate you tomorrow, you at least deserved two people who didn’t.”

I looked from Tylee and Jack, “Really?”

They got up and wrapped me in a hug. “Why did I ever start this LM thing?”

Tylee laughed and let go of me, “Because you’re stupid.”

Jack laughed, “And you let attention get the better of you.”

“I didn’t do this for attention.”

“Then what did you do it for?”

“I did it, because…because…”

“Because of what?”

“A lot of things for one, Alex, and… I don’t know I just would learn all these secrets and I couldn’t help but tell everyone about them.”

“Because you like attention.”

Tylee placed a hand on my shoulder, “Face it, Michelle, you’re an attention whore.”

“I thought you guys were supposed to be comforting me.”

Jack said, “Ha, yeah right. What kind of friends would be if we lied to you?”

“Thanks. I feel so loved. But seriously guys, what am I going to do?”

Jack and Tylee eyed each other and then looked at me.

They spoke at the same time. “We have no idea.”

“I am so screwed.”

I parked in the school parking lot.

Jack pulled up beside me out.

I got out and ran out to him. I placed my shaky hands on his chest.

“Jack, am I being stupid for being so scared.” I whispered.

“A little bit.”

My jaw dropped open. I punched him lightly. “Jack you’re supposed to support me.”

“You put all this on yourself. What am I supposed to say? And besides I’m still kind of mad at you.”

“Oh…”

He grabbed my hands and swung them back and forth, “I’m kidding. I know how Alex is. He let his anger get the better of him just like you. That’s probably the reason why I like both of you so much.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck and brought his lips down on mine. “We don’t deserve you.”

“No, you don’t, but you’re stuck with me anyways.”

I smiled into our kiss.

The bell rang.

I groaned. “We should just ditch today.”

“Oh, no I don’t think so.” He pulled my hand and dragged me up the steps.

I sighed as I entered the building.

“I’ll see you later, Jack.”

“Of course.”

We parted ways and headed toward our separate classrooms.

I walked into the 12th grade Lit. when I noticed that Alex, Katie, and Abbey weren’t here. This could not be good.

I had just sat down when someone walked into the room and handed Mr. Lane a note from the office.

This was it. I could feel it.

Mr. Lane read the note quickly and glanced up at me with confusion on his face.

“Michelle, you’re wanted in the principals office.”

The unoriginal chorus of “ooh’s” filled the room.

I ignored them and walked out the door.

As my footsteps echoed on the tile, my heart hammered even louder. Why was I so scared? After all Jack was right I had asked for this. I wanted this. I wanted attention.

Gossip, secrets, and lies. It was the thrill that I lived for.

I went up to the door where the sign glistened and shined the word: Principal. I reached for the handle when it opened up.

Katie and Abbey walked out. They took one look at me and smirked.

“Because of you my parents are having and “intervention” thanks so much.” Katie sneered.

“You are going down, Michelle or should I say LM” Abbey teased.

“I can’t believe I was friends with you two.” I told them sadly…regretfully.

Katie scoffed, “Friends? Please, don’t make me laugh.”

“What makes you think that seniors like us would be friends with you, a little underclassman? A nobody.” Abbey said.

“What are you talking about? We’ve been friends since middle school.” I thought back through the years. They had always seemed like real friends.

“Okay, maybe we were friends, but we aren’t now. I can’t believe you’d do this do us.” Katie said.

I looked into their eyes. “You’re right. I shouldn’t have done that. I just got consumed by—”

“Save it. We don’t want you’re excuses.”

“Just leave us alone. Besides we don’t want to be friends with “LM” anymore or Michelle for that matter. How could we ever trust you with anything?”

“Maybe we can work th—”

Katie held up a hand to silence me, “No, that wasn’t a question. That was a statement. No one can ever trust you with anything.”

“That was too a question!” I yelled.

“Well, too bad! We already know what your stupid answer would have been.”

“Katie, let’s just go. Before she gets mad and reveals another one of our secrets.” Abbey reasoned.

They walked away leaving me feeling alone. At least I still had Jack and Tylee.

I walked into the principals office and saw Alex sitting there. He had a pleased grin on his face. I was embarrassed that they had just heard everything Katie and Abbey said to me.

“Please sit.”

I did as he said.

“I assume you already know why you’re here?”

I only nodded.

“After looking through these texts and finding out that our vice principal was indeed having an affair with one of our teachers. I decided to investigate everything you said. I was shocked to find that Mr. Paul or what you called “big guy that looks like a thug” was actually selling drugs to students. He has been fired. In fact everything you sent in these texts turned out to be true, except…”

I sat up straighter, “Except? What do you mean except? I made sure those were true. Everything was either investigated or told to me personally. I don’t understand how one could be false.”

“Sleeping with a teacher is a horrible thing and we fire any teacher who does that. So it was only naturally that we interview Ms. Howe, Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Van Erven, and Alex Gaskarth.

I looked at Alex’s grin, “Oh no…”

He winked at me, “Oh yes…”

The principal continued. “There is no proof whatsoever that Alex slept with any of these teachers. We even had them take a lie detector test.”

I turned to Alex, “You lied. How did you know I was LM?”

Alex laughed, “I didn’t, but do you really think I would tell some random person my real secrets. Come on, I’m not that stupid.”

“But I thought you wanted me to have those secrets so that you could change. I thought you wanted to be a one-woman man.”

His smile fell, “I did, I-I mean I do…but I knew I would screw up eventually. So I thought it best to give you fake secrets just in case.”

“I can’t believe I got played by Alex Gaskarth twice. First as LM, and now as Michelle.”

“I can’t believe you’re LM.”

“I have to admit. You’re good.”

“You’re not too bad yourself.”

I raised my eyebrows, “Is that so?”

“Not many people can play me like you did. You made people hate me as LM. You changed me for the better as Michelle. I just happened to emerge victorious in your little game.”

“Oh…”

A silence filled the office.

The principal cleared his throat, “If you two are finished. Michelle Lancaster, as you’re punishment I’m going to have you address the entire school population. A public apology would be sufficient.”

My mouth dropped, “All eight hundred of them?”

“I find this to be a very lenient punishment. Consider yourself lucky.”

“You’re right I’m sorry. When do I have to do it?”

“Tomorrow. We’ll hold an assembly.”
“Tomorrow?!?! You can’t be serious?”

His hard was in a hard line. He looked down at me and said sternly, “I am very serious. It will be tomorrow. The sooner, the better. I want this all dealt with before graduation next week.”

“Yes sir.”

“You two may leave.”

>>>>>>>>>

“School’s almost over, do you want to get something to eat?” Alex asked after just leaving the principals office.

I laughed sarcastically, “Lunch, with you? No thanks.”

“Come on. It’s not like you’re in trouble. Everything worked out.”

“Everything did not work out! I lost two of my best friends, the entire school hates me, and even though Jack denies it I know he still is mad at me. And you know what? Everything is your fault! All of this started because of you. You and your stupid good looks. It’s because of you that LM was create, it’s because of you that everything in girl world at Dulaney High goes wrong!”

Alex shook his head, “I’m sorry. I didn’t hear any of that except for my “good looks” everything else just went in one ear and out the other.”

I groaned in agony, “You are unbelievable.”

“…with unbelievably good looks.”

I took one look at him and walked away.
