Beth P.O.V.
I smashed my face into my desk, waiting for the Friday Bell to summon the weekend.
Tomorrow we were all going to Six Flags. And when I say we, that includes Samantha.
Instead of listening to Ashley, my mind wandered to Tuesday night, when Cole had snuck up to my room.
After we finished slow dancing, we kind of stared at each other for a moment. And then... we heard Will's car down the street.
*
"I have to go," he frantically said, looking out the window at Will's monster-truck headlights. He looked back at me with an apologetic look. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay? Actually I'll see you in a few hours," he smiled.
I smiled back at him, showing my teeth. "Thanks, um.. the lessons were really... beneficial." Beneficial? How much of a nerd can I be?
He laughed, "You're a funny girl, Beth Harrington," he complimented. "And you're a good dancer, Cole Johnathan." I commented back, feeling too formal.
Cole smiled, but Will's car reached the driveway, and he became anxious again. He looked at me and scrunched his forehead, debating something internally.
He waited until Will was inside the house then climbed down my window, then ran around the corner where his car was parked.
*
The bell rang and Ashley's ranting went on in my ears.
"I can't believe he wasn't at the dance! But, it was funny to see Samantha's face," Ashley wickedly smiled.
I just rolled my eyes and looked straight ahead; ignoring her.
A scary thought crossed my mind, I felt alien just thinking it.
I think I actually like Samantha better than Ashley.
*******
Will, Vince and I waited in my living room for Cole to come with Candy and Samantha.
I wondered how enjoyable that car ride was.
I lounged my legs on the couch, laying my feet on Vince's lap, like I always used to do when things weren't awkward. I knew that this gesture would probably give him the wrong idea, but at this point, I really didn't care.
The front door opened and Candy stomped angrily inside.
"There's no way I'm riding for two hours in a car with her!" she screamed, pointing at Samantha who was gripped to Cole's shoulder.
I narrowed my eyes and looked at Candy, who was shaking her head furiously.
"I think Hell is a better ticket than that," she critisized.
A small chuckle broke from my lips and Samantha shot a look at me.
Cole's face was focused on Vince for some reason, cold and lifeless.
His eyes were squinted as he looked Vince up and down. I let my eyes travel to where my feet were now positioned in Vince's lap.
Was he... jealous?
I mean, resting my feet on someone wasn't that bad.
He must not like Vince in general.
"Coley, come on, I wanna' go!" Samantha whined.
Cole's now pale face turned slowly to Samantha and he mumbled something that sounded like an "okay".
I quickly took my feet off of Vince's lap and climbed from the couch, following Will out to the car.
I sat in the back with Vince and Candy, while Samantha rode in between Cole and Will in the front.
Her shoulder-length highlighted blonde hair was straightened and propped up in a preppy style, making me gag internally. Cole was still while driving, his hands squeezing the steering wheel as hard as they could.
What was his problem?
It was two hours of uncomfortable silence, just the sound of Cole's occasional sighs of frustration and Samantha's loud IPod ringing from her earphones.
I fell asleep and my head sunk onto the window, my breathing slowing.
Next thing I know we're at a gas station, and Samantha is outside of the car talking loudly to one of her friends.
Will and Candy were outside pumping gas into the car, laughing and smiling, and Vince was inside the convenient store buying Gatorade.
Cole was inside the car, the back of his head pressed hard on the seat head, his fingers pressed to his temples.
I sleepily climbed to the mid-section and rubbed my eyes, looking at Cole, who was looking straight ahead.
"Where are we?" I mumbled.
Cole kept looking straight ahead and locked his jaw. "It's across the street," is all he said.
Samantha climbed in the car, still chatting away to whatever friend would listen.
What is wrong with Cole?
I looked out the window to see rollercoasters lining the sky, distant screams over the horizon.
We all buckled into the car and drove over to the entrance, showing our tickets to the scanners.
We walked through the huge brass gates, overwhelming lights and music filling me.
People were scattered everywhere with big smiles, their adrenaline running.
"So... which ride should we go on first?" Will asked us all.
"I say the Scream Machine, then we should go on Kingda Ka," Candy instructed.
We all agreed with her judgement, they were both amazing rides. Vince got an unsteady look on his face; he got sick easily.
I sat with Vince on both the Scream Machine and Kingda Ka, both great rides.
It felt amazing to feel the fast wind in my hair, screams bubbling from my mouth as my stomach flipped while we went in loops and twists.
I loved the thrill of rollercoasters, but apparently, Vince did not.
After we all climbed off of Kingda Ka, Vince ran straight for a trash can, heaving his guts into it.
"Oh my god, that's so gross!" Samantha squealed to Cole, who still looked pissed off.
Samantha's phone rang and she peeled it from her purse as we waited for Vince to finish puking.
He leaned his head away from the trash with a disgusted look on his face and looked at me apologetically, "I think I'll sit out the next ride," he mumbled, whiping his mouth.
I turned around, about to ask Candy what ride to go on next, but she and Will were no where to be found.
"Where'd they go?" I wondered out loud.
"They ditched us," Cole muttered, no emotions coming through his words.
I looked at him with an unbelievable look, then just shook my head and looked away.
"I guess we'll just go on El Toro then," I muttered, my voice now harsh.
We traveled across the walkway where El Toro ran, the screams meeting my ears.
I stopped and breathed in the air of corn dogs and steam, closing my eyes and basking in the sunlight.
I opened my eyes, my mood refreshed, and looked at Vince.
"Well, I guess I'll just ride by myself on this one," I smiled, not caring anymore.
Samantha peeled her phone away from her for a moment and looked at me, "Ride with Cole, I don't want to go on another dirty rollercoaster. I worked hard on this hair this morning," she complained, then went back to chatting.
I sighed and looked at Cole, who shrugged stiffly.
We walked silently into the surprisingly low line that entered the rollercoaster.
As we waited, Cole looked ahead, still ignoring me.
My bad mood came back as the gate opened, allowing us to enter the two-seat car. The workers pulled the metal bar over our waists and I continued to look at a very angry Cole.
Finally, I couldn't take it anymore.
"What is your problem?" I asked, my voice harsh.
He turned to me slowly and cocked his head rudely, "What is my problem? Excuse me?" he retorted.
"You've been acting like a jerk ever since you picked us up. We're on the ride you've wanted to go on forever, so what's your problem?" I asked again, raising my voice.
"Well, I'm just sorry you didn't get to ride with your precious Vince," he shot back, then looked away quickly.
What?! How can he say that?
The workers gave a thumbs up, meaning the rollercoaster was ready.
"That's what this is about? Vince?!" I asked, unbelieving.
He still looked away, not saying anything.
The rollercoaster started moving slowly out of the wharehouse and into the sunlight, traveling towards the steep drop.
"What's the big deal? Why would you care? Huh? Even if I did like him, which I don't, why would you even care?!" I yelled, my temper finally breaking.
He turned to me, his breathing heavy, and grabbed my shoulders.
"Because you make me crazy Beth! Every time I see you with him, I go crazy! I can't seem to stop thinking about you, I can't get you out of my head. Even though you're the most annoying little freshman I've ever met, I can't seem to stop staring at you, or being near you! I like you Beth, that's what's wrong with me!" he finished, and let go of my shoulders, breathing hard and looking the other way out at the city as we traveled up higher.
I was left with my mouth wide open as I looked the other way slowly.
I was dumbfounded.
Did he actually just say that? Or was it my wild fantasies playing with my head again?
My mind was reeling, and then something came over me.
Suddenly I turned my head slowly to where he was still looking angrily out of the rollercoaster and smiled.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw me smile wide and turned to look at me.
We were getting closer and closer to the drop.
"You think I'm annoying?" I smiled, almost gushing.
He smiled back, showing his white teeth. It was breathtaking.
Then he grabbed my head in between his hands and kissed me.
I mean actually kissed me.
It wasn't a dream, or a fantasy, it was real.
The minute his lips touched mine the rollercoaster plummeted down the drop, sending squeals and shrieks through the air all around us.
I barely heard them.
My hands reached up to twine into his soft hair, pulling him close as possible to me, although it was hard with the metal bar in between us.
The rollercoaster twisted and turned while our lips moved together, and my cheeks heated. His lips were warm and soft, but also demanding and firm.
My mind couldn't wrap around anything; anthing but the feeling of his lips.
He tasted like mint gum and cotton candy, two of my favorite snacks.
His hands moved into my hair as the kiss grew more intense, and the rollercoaster kept on moving quickly.
The screams still erupted around us, until we came to a halting stop, jolting both of us.
We pulled apart breathlessly, our faces still close together.
I looked into his wild green eyes, which were looking into mine with such intense emotions that my heart, which was already beating a mile a minute, basically collapsed.
As the rollercoaster pulled back into the docking station we leaned away from each other, both of us still breathless and astounded.
I looked up at the El Toro logo above our heads:
EL TORO, THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME!!!
It definitely was.
********
Vince P.O.V.
I can't believe I puked in front of everyone.
Beth probably thinks I'm a total dork now.
I shook my head remembering the thought while I stood next to a babbling Samantha next to the exit of El Toro.
I looked around, trying to find something to bide my time with.
I spotted a small outdoor building labeled:
EL TORO PICTURES. SEE YOUR PICTURES FROM YOUR WILD RIDE ON EL TORO!
Curious to how ridiculous people looked while screaming in the middle of the ride, I crossed over to the building, eager to laugh at the funny faces.
It was always funny to comment on friend's pictures from the camera that snaps a picture at one point in the ride.
Screens lined the wall, displaying each car's photo.
I wonder if Beth is on here.
My eyes scanned the screens for Beth and Cole, and at first, I found nothing.
And then I found them.
My breath was ripped from my lungs as I realized it was them, on the ride..... kissing.
Kissing!
Anger boiled in me as I grinded my teeth together.
For years, I had liked Beth. And now this Cole guy just goes and steals her.
He doesn't deserve her.
I was still staring at the picture with my mouth open when the counter woman snapped me out of my trance, "Sir? Would you like to buy this one?" she asked me.
I pulled my wallet out of my pocket without a second thought, "I'll take one," I ordered as she printed the photo out.
She took my money and handed me the shiny photo, which was burning through me.
I stared bitterly at the photo for a moment longer, then carefully stuffed it deep in my pocket, where it would stay in my possesion until I could conjour up a plan.
