The Issue Of Emo Stereotyping
Very well known labels like Emo, Skater, Goth, and Punk have no accurate definitions. Yet the label of 'Prep' gets little judgment. Everyone seems to aim and discriminate the Emos, the Punks, and the Goths. If you are any of these how many times a kid in UGGs and Abercrombie came up to you and called you a Goth freak, Suicidal, or said some random rude comment? Probably more than once. Just because I choose to listen to Hawthorne Heights, and wear My Chemical Romance Ts some people think they get the right to come up to me and make me show my wrists. I have to react to it with a smile instead of kicking their ass.I think that Emo has two defenitions. First one is suicidle kids who are too dramatic and admit it to the world because they want attention. They are suicidal violent Emos, and they are proud of it. Because of that definition which most people turn to, I don’t say that I am emo. Even then I get arguments on how i am suicidle, and will go kill myself after I get home. I don't argue with that, if they want to say those stupid things let them knock themselves out.
The definition that I think of is artistic. You don't have to slit your wrist to be emo. Lots of kids who call themselves emo jump around happy! Emo doesn’t even mean emotional, its Emotive Hardcore. The only thing that is different about emos is that they like to dress in black, or colorful skeleton shirts, watch horror movies, write music, draw and have unique individual styles which is not what preps do. Preps, they are like clones, mostly brainwashed from trying to fit in. Some emos do that too. You know why? Because everyone is different. Not all emos are depressed, and cutting themselves ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM7dL3xeGlQ ) ; not all Preps are happy. I don’t bother giving my self the artistic definition because first of all people will turn it into the Emotional one, and I don’t like being labeled anyway.
If a person listens to a rock group are they probably Emo? That’s how people approach me. Let me say something, I was on the Saosin website when we had free time in school. Some one said that me and the band were emo just because they saw that beetle (Saosin fans, you know what I am talking about.) First of all Saosin is no where near “Emo!” For example “You are not alone” is not depressing song encouraging suicide, and neither is “Voices“! (In fact check out Voices on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpfNQd_4XWc ) Anything is more suicidle than this. Its like a band doing nothing but making people be hopefull.
I was on a website a long time ago. It was talking about how Hawthorne Heights are encouraging suicide. The reason for that was “Ohio Is For Lovers.” After I bought “Silence In Black And White” I found an explanation for the song, as for all the songs, “First of all, ’Cut my wrists and black my eyes,” is a figure of speech. Hawthorne heights is against suicide in any form…Their no mistaking it. This song is about our girlfriends who live in Ohio.” When the song was written because everyone was arguing with their girlfriends. The guys knew that were going to put people they love through a lot during the first few months.
What is interesting is that our school plays inappropriate music constantly. They consider emo music inappropriate, yet songs like Smack That play constantly. There are emo songs that have no suicide content I understand that some rock is negative while rap is pretty happy, but don‘t the lyrics encourage sex in most rap. So as I understand the principle rather us having sex than listening to screamo music in school.
Speaking of unfair Emo judgment. This guy constantly yells at me because he doesn’t like how I dress. He especially hates my Hot Topic sweatshirt. Apparently to him I should dress like a ‘normal girl’, which he calls UGGs, and Abercrombie. Since when there is a normal type of clothes. Its like saying that being white is normal.
Last year I died my hair plum. I think I was the first girl to dye my hair. I started being called Goth, and people said I was crazy. I was getting teased, even though some people did like how it looked. I went through that and didn’t give a shit. Than two other girls died their hair the same color. Does anyone remember that no one else died their hair until me? No. I was pointed at like those few Goth kids, which were very nice by the way. In September when we came back to school. Blondes were brunets, girls were getting blue high lights for charity, few other girls were getting highlights, one chick died her hair pink! No one cares anymore. Our school has no Goths now. Do you know how much that sucks? Preps are wearing stud belts from Hot Topic now. If I dye my whole head entire hair fire truck red no one will care anymore. Its great, but when I first did it, people were like monsters.
The whole Emo situation is just awful. I wish people would back off the stereotype, like they did of dye-phobia. Are there any ways to make them shut up? Don’t make me get started on how people judged the fact that I turned vegetarian last year. Somehow that turned into me being emo when I actually did wear Abercrombie then. Anyways, thanks for reading. Have great holiday! And please comment. For those who do love rock check out these great songs:
