The Eternal Confusion that is Emo - yet another rant
So. Emos. This seems to be the hot topic on Quizilla these days. As far as I understand, it's a label that endorses depression, dark clothing, bad music, and homosexuality (or, at least, guys in girl pants and makeup), and is usually displayed by young teenagers. The reasons as to why I don't like this 'emo' trend could fill a book, but I'll try to be brief. Oh, and a bit of a disclaimer - normally I try to avoid labels, as I find that they're essentially useless. This post is only dealing with the people who feel the need to label themselves, and with the emo subculture, there are a lot of those.Don't try to tell me that emo means emotional. 'Emo' is not a subculture of emotion. It's a subculture of trendy, convenient depression and an excuse for pre-teens to feel misunderstood. Now, I have nothing but respect for people who are dealing with true, clinical depression - I have friends who are depressed, and I know it's not something to make light of. But that's essentially what emos do. I know if I was depressed, I wouldn't feel the need to dress a certain way and listen to certain musicians and conform to a certail label, that just seems ridiculous to me. And to make matters worse, most of these 'emos' really do have friends, and functional families, and for the most part middle-class lifestyles. For those of you with real problems, this doesn't apply to you. But most emos are just attention seekers and drama queens who blow up the slightest thing for attention. And to make matters worse, they usually don't even realize they're doing it.
And as for the rest of it... dark clothing, sure, I don't care. Bad music, though, I do care about, but I'm not going to rant about it here. Personally I detest bands like My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, and AFI. But if that's what turns your crank, fine. Just, please, for the love of all things musically divine, don't listen to the bands because you're trying to be a nonconformist. Listening to MCR doesn't make you different. Being an emo doesn't make you different. Labeling yourself at all doesn't make you different. The sooner you accept this, the better.
And finally, the gayness. How can a sexual orientation be trendy? I just don't understand that, not in the slightest. Don't get me wrong. I'm about as gay as they come. But emo boys wearing girl pants and eyeliner and kissing each other to fit into a label?! God! That's like a white person pretending to be black! Just say no, kids. If you're truly gay, fine, but don't pretend. That's pitiful.
Yes, I realize that this post will be insulting to over half of the Quizilla population. If it really bothers you that much, perhaps consider doing breathing exercises, taking long walks in the rain, or writing poetry about how much this hurts you. In fact, I'll help. Breathe in.... breathe out... there. Don't you feel so much better?
