Studying Abroad....

Well, some of you may already know that I spent last summer in Western Germany, in a small town called Lunen, near Dortmund and Mannheim. I lived with a girl named Louisa and her family, and had to speak entirely "auf Deutsch" for the month I was there. I went to German school, drank German booze, and went "German shopping", and lived a typical German experience. I want more! I don't want to live in this "po-dunk" state, Missouri anymore. And, I'll be graduating from high school in less than two years. So, I figured I'd study abroad in either Germany or Norway, or even Austria.
I first thought of Germany, because I have many friends there. I wouldn't be alone, and I could go stay with Louisa, Darius, or even Bohm or Larissa during holidays, instead of having to fly back to the states, or shelling out cash for a holiday in some other country. That, and I have a sturdy command over the German language, as I've been studying it for 4 years, I lived there at one point, and will have been studying it 5 or 6 years by the time all is said and done and I graduate. But, that would just be too easy!
So, then I dug deeper inside and asked myself, "Nikki, where do you really want to live?" I didn't even have to think that hard. My subconscious immediately answered, "Norway." Norwegian is another language I'm learning, and I've always been interested in the culture of Norway. I am a follower of Norse-Asatru heathenism (originated in Scandinavia). I am obsessed with Norwegian Black Metal. The Vikings are pretty friggin' awesome. And, I like fish and booze, and in Norway, that's practically all they consume, I hear. (Joking.) But, I don't have a sturdy command over Bokmal or Nynorsk, which means I'm gonna have to get "Rosetta Stoned" some time soon. But, I like learning other languages and being able to speak in different tongues. It's always amusing to me the looks of confusion I get when I scream out in traffic, "Wach Das Fich auf, Anschlang!" (Yay for roadrage.)
So, I've basically decided that I'm going to attend university in Bergen, Norway, and suck it up and move there after high school. Hey, I'm mad at most of my friends anyway, and Meg, my bestie is set on moving back to New York, so why the fuck should I stick around here? If I'm in Norway, then I'll be closer to my German friends than I would be here, and I would have the opportunity to begin anew. (There, at least, people hopefully won't constantly tease me over the "Ryne, make me piss" incident...it's a long story, and another legitimate reason for abstinence.) I'm going to pack it all up, buy a bunch of outlet converters, because I only have one and I have a lot of electronic crap I would have to replace over there, (and it would be impossible for me to part with Missy, my guitar). Oh yeah, and I'm bringing Bonni, the chihuahua as well; which means that I'll be shelling out on dog expenses, dance class expenses (I do pointe and ballet and refuse to give that up), and college expenses, maybe even living expenses if I can't find a decent Study-abroad full-ride scholarship, but I'll leave that to my school counselor.
I would like to major in either Psychology, Psychoanalysis and treatment, English literature, or Germanic languages, literature, and histories (because that includes all of 'em: German, Old Goth, the Scandinavian languages, and English). But, the psychology majors are my top choices as of now. That could change though, I have an avid interest in creative writing and the studying of foreign languages as well. But, a career in psychology pays more and is in high demand in Norway I hear. (They have a high amount of depressed individuals due to their cold climate; thus, more business for me.) So, since I've been hearing that the University of Bergen has quite an accredited program in Psychology and it's really something to write home about, apparently, I'm considering applying there. That's my dream school. I'm also considering University of Oslo, Lillehammer University, Ostfold (the O has a bar through it, meaning it's pronounced, "Irst-fold"), and some schools in Germany: University of Mannheim, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (I have actually visited this campus, and this is a very good school. It's probably my top choice if I don't get into any of my Norwegian schools.)
