Suzume's Riddle Contest

'"I'm not alive but I can walk," you paused to make sure he was listening, "Usually not one alike is in a flock," he seemed to be considering all you had said, "We come in all different hues," it seemed he hadn't figured it out yet, "For some we pose as a muse," you finished.' That was the riddle, taken directly from the story. It seems that no one won the contest. Why did I post? Because I promised to give out the answer quite a while ago. (Take this moment to think if you want to try and figure the riddle out for yourself. No cheating.) Suzume is the character from my 'Gray' one-shot. She chose this because when answering a riddle, one normally assumes that it's something beyond your reach. The answer was much more simple than one would expect, and something that a man, especailly a demon, would never consider. It's something that plays a role in our everyday lives, but normally get paid very little attention to. Except if it's something you really like. Still don't understand? The answer? A pair of shoes. It's something so minor than it could easily be over-looked. Most people who entered this contest thought it must be something deathly brilliant. It wasn't. This was the trick of Suzume's riddle. It really was no fun, that no one won the contest.
